Take back your own power

Blog post on how to take back your power

It’s a phrase that’s used a lot. But what does “take back your power” even look like? For me it was reclaiming my voice, telling quite a few things to sod off and making changes to bring my life into alignment as it was very out of whack.

I was a people pleaser, a yes woman, a “tell me what to do” person. Who got lost under all the noise. I didn’t know what my own voice sounded like let alone reclaim it.

It can be a very lonely space to find yourself and not know who you are anymore.

Working with dragon energy taught me a lot very quickly. And the very first thing was to claim what was mine. Even the crappy bits. I had to embrace my confusion, anger issues and frustrations. Sounds counter intuitive doesn’t it. Shouldn’t you be looking to shed or relate these first? You can but without understanding accepting and understanding them more , they can come back. With reinforcements.

Ok how to I claim what’s mine?

First up it takes time. A lot of time. But as with many things that take time and effort it’s very much worth it.

Start at the beginning – write a list if it helps.

  • What makes you happy.
  • Which aspects of yourself do you like.
  • What do you not like so much about yourself
  • If you change things about yourself what would they be and why
  • Are there parts of yourself of how you act you loathe and bury deep down to not have to deal with it.

Spend time on each especially the difficult ones that you really prefer to body swerve as this is where the real gold can be found, and the most powerful changes.

Once you have your list you can acknowledge them. Accept, or at least make peace, that they exist and are part of you,  warts and all. Acceptance is very much the first step as it stops handing power over when you eyeball the lot. It removes the power imbalance that avoidance, denial and hiding can give to these aspects.

See yourself whole with everything you’ve listed. It will push you as certain things you will want to deny, hide, release immediately and other fun stuff. Instead tackle it head on.

An example of what I mean.

My anger issues were colossal but I eventually accepted that at the time they were part of who I was at that point in time.  With some work and observation I began to understand it was the unheard and ignored part of who I was. I would silence myself, allow myself to be shut down nd walked over until I eventually snapped.

I came to terms with a lot of the underlying issues – grief, lack of voice, people pleasing – those were just the tip of the iceberg. They took years.

Now when I feel it bubbling up I can ask what’s triggered it, what I need to do to help it along and if it’s vent mine in the first instance. This process now takes minutes …..as I understand myself that much more deeply.

If it’s mine I’ll deal with it as I take responsibility for who I am , how I feel.

And this my friends is taking your power back.

Responsibility for yourself if the very first step in self empowerment.

But what if I get stuck can I still take my power back?

Thats the good part there are plenty of people out there who can help you along the way. They are not doing the work for you – simply helping you pinpoint what’s going on as they are a little detached and not so in the guts of it all.

I have people I turn to when I know I haven’t fully seen whats going on with myself *wry smile*

If you want to speak to me you can book an “I’m not sure session” to get the ball rolling.
